This week, Southside Golf’s Ryder Cup tournament came to a close. The Southside Golf Team has won the Ryder Cup for the past two years. The tournament consists of three non-conference rounds of golf against Greenwood. Rounds one and two consist of a 9-hole tournament, and Round three consists of an 18-hole tournament.
The team’s coach, Adam Lucas, says that, “When we were isolated individually we didn’t perform as well, so I think our best is when we are competing as teammates in these competitions, because that’s where we had our lead.”
For the first two rounds, the top 4 girls played, and the top 5 boys played, with each match counting as a point for the winning team. The first round of the tournament, held at Ben Geren, Southside’s home course, had Southside leading 4-1. Despite some gain by Greenwood in the second round, Southside kept their lead with a score of 6-4.
Abby Duncan, a freshman, stated that when going into Round three, “I was kind of nervous, because we won one and Greenwood won the other one, so I was really nervous but also excited and confident.”
Unfortunately, Southside lost the Ryder Cup after a tie-breaking playoff in round three. With both teams ending the round with 10 points, the teams had to have an extra playoff round. In the playoff round, Greenwood took the win and took home the Ryder Cup until next season.
