On September 18th, 2025, Darrin McKissic, the head band director of Chaffin Middle School, suddenly passed away from a heart attack at 57 years old. McKissic was loved by the people around him. His life was devoted to music, faith, and the other he spent his life. He was a husband, father, son, teacher, mentor, and friend.
Born July 2, 1968, in New Orleans, LA, McKissic spent 22 years with his wife, Tammy McKissic. They had built a loving home full of laughter and love while following their Christian values. This shaped the way he taught, served, and cared for others. McKissic worked with music in Louisiana before bringing his work to Arkansas public schools. He has inspired generations of children to love music and believe in themselves. He was remembered as a true gentleman- kind, steady, and full of humor. His colleagues admired his integrity and enthusiasm, while he made his students feel valued. His band room was a safe place for many.
“Mr. Kissic was such a wonderful teacher. He was such a highlight during the day, especially when you’ve been having a rough day. He motivated me to stay in band class for when I go to high school next year. I’ll miss him.” Said Ahna Baker, who is a current 8th-grade Chaffin student.
McKissic’s funeral will be held on Monday, September 22nd, and will be surrounded by family, friends, colleagues, and current and past students. He will be remembered as the bright and determined soul who wanted to motivate kids through music.
