The Southside High School football homecoming is approaching, and each grade has selected four homecoming maids to represent their class. Today we will hear a little bit about all four of the sophomore homecoming maids, and some additional information about them!
The sophomore homecoming maids for the Southside football homecoming event of 2026 include Sophia Nguyen, Sarah Chung, Lexi Gutierrez, and Berklee Vallis. These girls participate in clubs, organizations, and now, are representing their class by participating in the football homecoming maid!
Introducing homecoming maid, Sarah Chung. Chung is very included at Southside High School. Chung is involved in the Southside band, the Superintendent Advisory Council, the Asian Culture Club, and DECA. She enjoys being in these organizations because they really help her connect with other people and encourage her to build bonds and participate in teamwork activities. She decided to run for homecoming maid because she saw it as an opportunity to be more active within her school community and show school spirit, while also being a representative for her high school class!
Chung expresses, “I hope to gain the experience of recognizing the importance of having good character and responsibility, and also having a memorable experience with Southside High School and all of the other homecoming maids. I think that this is a great experience and something to definitely remember. By being included in this, I know that I can look back on this experience, and it will also give me something to talk about. When I look back on this in the future, I want to know that I learned a lot of character and responsibility from this, and also that I made new friends as well.”
Chung says that the most exciting thing about being a homecoming maid is getting to meet the other girls and forming new friendships with them. She says that it is something that she loves doing, and being involved in things like homecoming maid is a great opportunity to meet new people, form new bonds and friendships, and have fun.
Next is sophomore homecoming maid Sophia Nguyen. Nguyen is also very involved at Southside High School. Nguyen is in FCCLA, the Asian Culture Club, Hearts in Action, the Sophomore Council, the International Club, and Habitat for Humanity. Sophia attempted to run for homecoming maid because she enjoyed doing it last year, and it helped her become more outgoing. When she applied to be a homecoming maid for the first time last year, she saw it as an opportunity to meet and talk to new people and try something new for a change.
Nguyen claims that by doing this last year, it helped her “get out of her comfort zone”, and it introduced her to something new and fun that she had never experienced before, so she wanted to do it this year as well for an even better experience.
Nguyen notes, “Something that I hope to gain from this experience is confidence. I say this because it really helps me get out more, and it’s really nice to meet people older than me. By being a homecoming maid, I think that it is a great way for me to get out of my comfort zone and do something that requires me to talk to people and also be out in front of a bunch of people.”
Nguyen claims that the most exciting thing about being a maid is trying on and picking out dresses. She loves that she gets the opportunity to dress up in a long, nice, fancy dress, and that trying on dresses is so much fun because there are so many options to choose from. Nguyen expresses that it is really nice getting to see and try on all the options that she loves, and her favorite part is getting to show off the dress that she picked and loved the most.
Next, is homecoming maid Lexi Gutierrez. Gutierrez is involved in the jazz band, XC, Class Council President, Student Council, Superintendent Advisory Council, Delta Beta Sigma, and DECA. And for fun, Lexi takes art class and clarinet lessons! Lexi wanted to run for homecoming maid to represent the sophomore class as a whole and also the band. Gutierrez says that her sophomore class has wonderful students and that they deserve to be recognized properly. Gutierrez says that the band has a great program and that they are very impressive for a high school band, and that she wants to show that off!
Gutierrez states, “I hope to gain fun and lasting friendships and most of all, memories. I also want to represent the sophomore class very well”, she continues, “I think the most exciting thing about being a homecoming maid is getting to know the other girls and creating lasting friendships and memories with them.
Lasty, sophomore homecoming maid, Berklee Vallis. Berklee is in Hearts in Action, and on the Southside tennis team. She chose to be in Hearts in Action because she is passionate about helping others, as well as being an active member in society.
She enjoys playing tennis for Southside because it makes her feel good about herself. Vallis says that overall the sport has given her the ability to control past anxiety and the fight for a win. She chose to run for homecoming maid because she always wanted to at least once in her life, and she says this year was calling her name. Vallis says that she felt confident in her decision to apply for this position, so that is what drove her to do it. Berklee says that pushing herself to run for homecoming maid was liberating, so she knew it was the right choice.
Vallis says, “I hope to gain confidence from this experience, to an extent. As well as the responsibility of being held at a higher standard, being able to work under the pressure of others watching me is something I find important in the long run.”
Vallis thinks the most exciting thing about being a homecoming maid is the memories created from the experience. She says that from the moment you submit your name on the ballot, to the second you are walking out onto that field, they are all amazing memories.
Vallis claims that even the RTI session, which she was pulled into with all the other maids, is such a significant moment, and that seeing the expression of excitement on every girl’s face is what makes her smile even harder. She says that getting to experience girlhood with the other maids is such an empowering experience and moment, where you never even wish for it to end.
All of the sophomore homecoming maids for the Southside football homecoming court are good fits, and they all seem like responsible, accountable, and great representatives. Every one of them has a detailed description as to why they chose to represent the sophomore class by being a homecoming maid, and they all seem very excited to be a part of the football homecoming court this year. Both the students and the homecoming maids cannot wait for homecoming!
