Homecoming is one of the key memories in everyone’s high school experience. The goal of homecoming is to bring everyone together and honor those who excel in their academics and extracurricular activities. Bringing everyone together is difficult when half of the attendees aren’t having fun, so Southside has aimed to make the dance better for everyone.
Kate Willson, a writer for CoutureCandy, said that homecoming is to “mark a moment of unity, school pride, and excitement, allowing students to come together.”
In the weeks leading up to homecoming, class councils decorated the hallways to match the theme, Rio. Letting the student council get involved gave them a chance to configure the dance in a way that students would enjoy.
Taylor Wrich, a senior at Southside, said spirit week “got me super excited, but I was so disappointed with the dance.”
Southside aims to bring the student body together through fun activities such as homecoming. To give everyone a chance to be involved, Southside had a spirit week leading up to homecoming.
Ariel Green, a Junior at Southside, said, “Some of the hallways had much more effort than the others.”
There was an entrance price for the dance to cover the costs, and whether it’s worth it depends on the person going.
Green said that homecoming was “ kind of a waste of money” and that “ it was kind of boring.”
The activities leading up to the dance, such as decorating the hallway and spirit week, were fun and inclusive for all students. The overall opinion of the dance seems to be that, while it was an okay place to be for a while, the students got bored quickly and had more fun with their friends after the dance. In the future, many students hope to see better entertainment at the dance to make their experience better.
