Vice President Kamala Harris increased her efforts to engage young voters, a group expected to play a major role in the upcoming election. According to a recent ABC News/Ipsos poll, Harris leads Donald Trump by 14 points among voters under 30. The latest data from the Institute of Politics at Harvard also show Harris with steady support from this age group.
“This generation has shown it’s committed to social change and political engagement,” says Anil Cacodcar, Chair of the Harvard Public Opinion Project. He noted that young voters turned out in record numbers in 2020 and could again be a decisive force in the election.
Harris’s campaign has centered around issues that matter to young voters, including climate change, student debt relief, and LGBTQ+ rights. To reach young people directly, her team relied on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram and partnered with popular influencers. These efforts became a thing to engage young voters on the platform they use every day.
Despite her lead among young women, Harris has been facing challenges connecting with young men, where her support is less certain.
“Connecting with young men remains a key focus as we approach Election Day,” says a campaign spokesperson. The spokesperson explained that Harris’s team has recently launched new strategies to reach the audience.
With more votes coming in their way, Harris’s team works to secure young voters, a key part of the Democratic base. They plan to expand their social media efforts to reach more young people. Harris’s team hopes that support from these voters will make a difference on Election Day.
