Since Taylor Swift’s first surprise game appearance at the Chiefs-Bears game, the sports world has seen the power of Taylor and her Swifties. Taylor Swift’s attendance at the games has boosted views. Swift has attended the past two games, the most recent being the Chiefs-Jets game on Sunday, which was the most watched Sunday show since the Superbowl, averaging close to 27 million viewers, according to NBC Sports. When the game is playing, commercials and ads broadcasting “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” are on instead. Even Travis Kelce jersey prices skyrocketed with a nearly 400% spike in sales.
While some people are happy with the increasing number of views the NFL gets, some football fans are not pleased. Some believe that the NFL coverage has gone overboard when they constantly cut to Taylor Swift and her friends. Even the commentators are making frequent references to the pop star. Avid football fan Noah Coleman says, “It is starting to get a bit annoying when they show Taylor Swift seventeen times.” Hardcore Chiefs fan Teya Haney says, “I’m mad at all parties involved. By her fully making this public, it kind of ruins the Chiefs season because now all season tickets are sold out. I’m mostly mad at the Swifties because they are the reason the season tickets are sold out. Swifties, in their own selfishness and own greed to want to see their favorite celebrity and are taking up all of the seats for actual football fans who actually understand the game.” When asked if she thinks the NFL is overdoing it, Teya replied, “I think they’re milking it to get every penny. I think they don’t understand anything about Taylor Swift and are taking advantage of the relationship. It’s super annoying.”
Everyone can agree that Taylor Swift has majorly impacted the NFL. Ultimately, I think it is entirely okay for Taylor Swift to want to see her boyfriend play. But Swifties are buying out all the season tickets… that’s not cool. The NFL makes it easier for Chief fans since they always comment on Taylor Swift. So, I understand both sides of the story. As long as Taylor’s happy, I’m happy.
