With their 2023 show featuring the music from West Side Story, the Southside Maverick Marching Band continued their renowned tradition of excellence this football season. Including selections such as “Tonight” and “The Jet Song,” the band was able to bring the Romeo and Juliet-style love story to life during halftimes. Under their second year with director Ralph Brody, the band made leaps and bounds toward finding their new identity while still continuing their lasting success.
“This season meant a lot to me, between making all-state for two years and the constant teasing of certain other players, it was my most enjoyable year,” senior tuba player Rayden Laird said.
The Maverick Band is known for fun shows and high energy in the stands. This passion continues throughout the football season with traditions such as stand tunes and cadences adding to the atmosphere of Southside football games. Third quarter drumline even furthers this tradition as they go all out in front of the student section right after halftime.
“Getting to play for all the fans is a great feeling and I think it helps us build connections with our student fanbase,” sophomore drumline member Thomas Burton said.
This season has been a very memorable year for the Maverick Band as they were able to continue their accomplishments through receiving all 1s in marching, concert, and sightreading assessments. A new chapter is slowly unfolding in the band’s storied history, and so far it is looking a lot like the incredible chapters before it.
