Football is one of the biggest sports at Southside. Coached by Robert Dameron, the team experienced many successes and grew together.
Coach Dameron said, “We kind of struggled getting out of the gate the first three or four games, but the second half of the season was much better. And we doubled our win total from the year before. So all in all, it was a successful season.”
According to Cornerback Aden Johnson, “We leave our hearts out on that field in the games we lose. We try to make it better for us in the team so we can go into the next game with that great winning mentality.”
When talking about the positive effects of football, Johnson says, “It taught me to be patient [and it made] me physically and mentally stronger because being on defense, I have to learn to take hits or deliver them so that I won’t be afraid of what’s gonna come my way.”
Quarterback Devin Huggings said, “It’s been a blast meeting new people and teammates.”
According to Johnson, the best game was “against Harbor because it’s been years since we beat them. Plus, it was their homecoming.”
There is anticipation for the upcoming season. Huggings said, “I’m playing with somebody good and we’re just gonna have a great season.”
Coach Dameron said, “We’re looking forward to continuing to grow in the 2023-2024 season.”
This season the team worked and improved together. Coach Dameron will continue to coach the team and help their future successes.
