With the addition of freshmen at Southside, this is the second year of an all-freshman cheer team. This year had many highlights like the fun routines and going to nationals. The team is coached by Sarah Hubbs and Meredith Simpson.
According to Coach Simpson, “In July, they attend cheer camp. The Freshman cheerleaders practice one day a week after school. This team worked very hard this year to choreograph, learn, and practice for each performance which includes cheer, dance, stunting, tumbling, and a pyramid …we also participated in community service by volunteering at events like races and elementary school carnivals.”
Lucy Thames, a freshman cheerleader, said she learned about “making relationships with people and creating bonds through the sport” on the team this year. She said their “own little group” made them better cheerleaders, and she describes the team as family.
Another cheerleader, Gracie Young said that freshman cheer “made me work harder on my grades and get closer with people.” When asked why she tried out for the team, she said, “I wanted to improve as a cheerleader and be with my friends and be able to get all the opportunities.”
When describing the 2022-2023 season, Coach Hubbs said, “This cheer season was absolutely amazing. Everyone got along so well. Everyone worked hard. Every performance everyone knew the goal, and they met the goal. They just all worked together so well, so it was a very good season.”
The team made many memories, saw many successes, and grew together. Coach Hubbs and Coach Simpson will continue to coach the team for the upcoming season.
