This week, high temperatures have rescheduled and canceled athletic and extracurricular activities. Sports like football, golf, and tennis have all canceled games and practices as temperatures rise well over 100 degrees, with the heat index reaching over 110 degrees.
“We need more practice than we’re getting,” said varsity tennis player Kaitlyn Smith.
Monday night’s junior varsity football games are rescheduled, with the Freshmen games against Bentonville West moved to later in the evening at 7:30 P.M. Precautions are being taken at Monday night’s game, as players are taking quarterly breaks to ensure safety. This week’s golf tournaments against Alma and Greenwood are both rescheduled to later dates and all practices are canceled. Tennis practices are also canceled, with matches against Bentonville West and Fayetteville rescheduled.
“There are limitations, but we were able to get good practices,” said head football Coach Kim Dameron.
The varsity football game against Northside has also been delayed to 8 P.M. due to heat concerns. To ensure safety for all students participating in the game, Varsity players are taking quarterly breaks, as are Southside Cheer and Southern Belles. Student-athletes are advised to stay hydrated throughout the day, as well as stay nourished, and refrain from extended time outdoors is extremely important to beat the heat.
