On Wednesday, August 23, Southside held a glow-in-the-dark pep rally in the west storm shelter to prepare for Friday’s Southside vs. Northside football game. Southside encouraged students to dress in glow-in-the-dark paint or clothes to support the Mavs. Students received free glowing Mav t-shirts, hot dogs, and snow cones at the pep rally.
The pep rally began with music played by the drumline while dance and cheer performed their band dances. Various games included musical chairs, catching marshmallows, and a blanket race.
Junior Southern Belle Lily Norman says, “My favorite part was cheering in a clump with the football players and cheerleaders. The energy radiated off everyone, and we were all in a great mood!” Norman states that she “had a wonderful time creating school spirit.”
After the games, students gathered around, yelling chants to get hyped for the biggest rivalry game of the season. Drumline started playing as students danced around the gym to finish the festivities. As the pep rally ended, students spent their time outside socializing with one another and enjoying the free food and snow cones.
Norman says what excites her the most about the Southside vs. Northside game this Friday is “to perform and see all the students get excited because it’s always so fun with the rivalry.” She also added, “win or lose, it’s always a great time to support the Mavericks.”
The Battle of Rogers Avenue is one of the most attended games by both schools. Many supporters from both sides come out to cheer on their team. To this day, it is one of Southside´s most anticipated weeks of the season.
