Last Friday, November 10th, the Southside Mavericks traveled across the state to play against Jonesboro in game one of the playoffs. The cheer team and a pep band went as well. With a 4 ½ hour drive up there and the same going back, it’s safe to say that everyone was happy when they went home with a win.
The game went back and forth from the start. The Mavericks were the first to score, early in the first. When the refs threw down two flags during the extra point attempt, the coaches had enough and decided to go for two, putting them up 8-0 early. The Golden Hurricane then scored and went for an extra point making it 8-7. It was back and forth the rest of the quarter, with both teams scoring touchdowns. After that, the Mavericks went on a scoring rampage, making the score 32-14 at halftime. The Mavericks won by a large margin, with a final score of 53-27.
The Maverick defense was on fire as well. There were multiple stops and two great interceptions. The first interception was made halfway through the second quarter, as #9 Devin Huggins intercepted a pass for a pick-six, hyping up his teammates and the crowd. Then in the 3rd quarter, #6 George Herrell intercepted a deep pass over one of Jonesboro’s wide receivers. All in all, this was a great game for both teams with the Mavericks coming out with the win.
