Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that is in schools across the country. This organization builds affordable housing and helps engage students with their community. Southside Habitat for Humanity annually puts on an event called Shantytown, which aims to mimic homelessness for the participants and spread awareness.
“Shantytown serves as Southside Habitat for Humanity’s annual fundraiser, where members spend the night on campus in front of the Southside indoor Activity Center in cardboard homes that are built by the members themselves… Shantytown holds great significance for our chapter as it sheds light on the disparities in living conditions and encourages us to appreciate the luxuries we often take for granted,” says Southside Habitat for Humanity President Kaden Tran.
“We’re trying to show students how the less fortunate people live and bring awareness to that,” says Southside Habitat for Humanity Secretary Landy Ballard.
“The planning and execution of Shantytown involved a countless number of tasks, including reaching out to sponsors, conducting prior fundraising activities such as our calendar fundraiser, designing event merchandise, and organizing volunteer opportunities for members. Despite the challenges involved, our efforts are driven by a shared commitment to our organization’s mission. The outcome of Shantytown is consistently inspiring, and we are deeply grateful for the vision behind Habitat for Humanity,” says Tran.
“A portion of the proceeds generated from sponsors, event registrations, and club fundraising will support our chapter’s future initiatives, including future Shantytown events. Additionally, these funds will contribute to the Arkansas Valley Habitat for Humanity’s efforts in building homes and facilitating home remodels,” says Tran.
