The Southside Maverick Wrestling team had a few matches over Christmas break. The boys and girls fought hard and secured multiple wins. The girls’ team asserted their dominance, and the boys managed to get a lot of pins.
Three of the girls finished with medals. Paiges Arsola won 1st place with six wins, three of which were pins. Bella Soto won 2nd place with five wins, three of which were pins. TayLynn Ellis won 5th place with five wins, and all five were pins. Olivia Stout won six matches, five of which were by pin. Hayden Watkins and Abby Jackson each won one match by pin.
Although none of the boys got medals, they still succeeded in their matches. Jaxon Waite, Alex Little, and Kordai Curley had the most wins out of all the male wrestlers. Waite had four wins, three of which were by pin. Little had three wins, one of which was by pin. Curley had three wins, all three of which were by pin. Johnny Vargas and Xavier Saffer each had two wins, both wrestlers winning both their matches by pin. Carson Schmid and Tay Edwards each had one win, both winning their match by pin.
These wrestlers put in a lot of hard work every week to prepare for their matches. Having to compete over a school break shows how dedicated these athletes are. Wrestling is not an easy sport, but the Southside Mavericks Wrestling team demonstrated what a good wrestling team is capable of.
The Mavericks Wrestling team is looking for incoming 9th and 10th graders who would like to be a part of the team. Head coach Steve Arnold is hoping to build out the team so there will be a lot of experienced wrestlers continuing to compete each year.
