Hamas and Israel Extend Cease-fire to Last a Seventh Day, Releasing Hostages

Wall Street Journal

The war with Israel and Hamas has come to a temporary cease-fire for seven days now; with the release of hostages from both sides, some speculate that the reason for the war could possibly be over.

When Israel was attacked by a surprising bomb drone-strike from Hamas, Hamas also took advantage of the chaos, taking over 100 hostages at the time. These hostages would then provoke Israel to counter-attack, causing multiple deaths on both sides. Israel’s counter attack left Gaza in a desperate state, struggling for resources and hospitals, and world support for the Palestinians in Gaza increased.

Gaza refugees desperately seek a way to escape the chaos, trying to move out while ground forces move in. The attempted escape only caused more deaths for Palestinians, which then only increased support of Gaza instead.

After the increase in reputation, U.S. president Joe Biden visited the prime minister of Israel to negotiate a cease-fire. Eventually, after some time, the Israel prime minister decided to negotiate a cease-fire, giving about 4 hours each day for refugees to escape. After these events, and more fighting, Israel and Hamas negotiated a full treaty, giving multiple days of cease-fire. More refugees are fleeing Hamas, receiving support from the U.S. in terms of supplies, transportation, and electricity. The displaced people in southern Gaza are told to evacuate to Rafah.

“All of the sudden, after a temporary truce, they (Israel) came up with new orders telling us that the people from Al-Qarara,  Habathan, and al-Fuzaa, had to leave to Rafah,” said Al-Quadra, a displaced Gazan Ghassan said.

Even though there has been a long treaty, tensions still increase as support for both sides rally in opposition and help in the long Israel-Hamas war.
