Southside High School’s art teacher, David King, shared his experience and journey with art on Thursday, Sep. 13, in his classroom.
“When I was a kid, I always had a passion for art which led me to wanting to pursue it at my older ages,” King explained during the interview.
King’s journey into art as a career was not direct. Initially, he began college with the goal of becoming an architect, however two years in, he decided to switch his major. He found joy in creating art and decided that teaching it would be the best way to share his passion. His favorite project to date is working on stained glass pieces, which allows him to explore his creativity in new ways.
Art exists not just as a job for King, but a key part of his daily life. “Art helps in many aspects of life, from the clothes you wear to your living room layout to your style,” he stated. King believes that art subsists more than just a school subject—it shapes how people see the world.
In his classes, King teaches Art 1, Sculpture, and AP Art, providing students with a broad range of skills. By the end of the year, King hopes his students will have improved their hand-eye coordination and unlocked their creative potential. His goal is to inspire them to see art, not just as a subject, but as a way to think more deeply about their surroundings.
Through his dedication, Mr. King continues to nurture the next generation of artists at Southside High School. His passion for art shines through both in his teaching and in the art he creates.
