A recent category 2 hurricane is rapidly intensifying and is on a straight path for Puerto Rico.
On Wednesday evening, hurricane Lee was a category 1 hurricane, and Thursday it escalated to a category 2 hurricane, with the maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. A potentially catastrophic hurricane is due to hit multiple islands and Puerto Rico.
“Lee will likely become a major hurricane later today,” the National Hurricane Center said in a meeting on Thursday 11 a.m. “Lee is forecast to remain a very strong major hurricane through the weekend.”
Rapid intensification is occurring in Hurricane Lee, which means it is constantly growing in strength at a breakneck speed. Lee is forecast to hit 160 mph, with more speed being gained in the warm waters of the Atlantic with cold winds to accommodate.
“The most probable scenario is that Lee will track far enough north to bring just a brush of gusty winds and showers to the northern Leeward Islands,” The Weather Channel reported. “however, we can’t fully rule out a more southern track that takes Lee closer or directly through the Islands with more serious impacts.”
There is increasing concern as the center of Lee is scheduled to hit North of Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico this week; with the storm going west-northwest at a slow 15 mph, but is quickly ramping up in speed.
