Former Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, made history as the first speaker to be ousted from his position. It was a 216-210 vote coming from a majority of members of the Democratic Party and “far-right” Republicans discontent with the decisions McCarthy was making as speaker.
Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan were the original Republican representatives who had stakes in the race. While Scalise seemed to be ahead in the race, he withdrew his candidacy before being elected. It was later revealed he had been diagnosed with a type of blood cancer. Jordan, on the other hand, fell short in votes. With Scalise and Jordan being out, Mike Johnson, former House Representative for Louisiana was elected as the new Speaker of the House on October 25.
Johnson is a “social conservative” from Louisiana. Before being a House Representative, he was the senior legal counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund. With only being elected as a House Representative in 2016, Johnson is the least experienced Speaker of the House in history. He bases his platform on his religion — christianity, saying “I believe God has ordained and allowed each one of us to be brought here for this specific moment.” He considers himself a Southern Baptist and evangelical. He will carry these beliefs throughout all decisions he makes as the new Speaker of the House.
