The Palestinian refugees dealing with Israeli forces struggle to find shelter as the pressure increases.
A building sheltering hundreds of Palestinian refugees from the Israel-Hamas war was severely damaged by Israeli tank fire. According to the UN, Israeli forces increase the pressure on southern Gaza, forcing more refugees to flee their settlements and shelters.
Along with the explosive rounds of tank fire, flames were also set ablaze, ravaging both buildings and people alike. On top of this, the IDF has increased its efforts in Southern Gaza, where medical buildings and shelters lie.
“Buildings ablaze and mass casualties. Safe access to and from the center has been denied for two days. People are trapped,” said Thomas White, the director of UNRWA Affairs, on X. At the time, at least 9 people were killed, and another 75 injured, White said.
With the mass panic, refugees struggle to flee Gaza, and some even die in the process. Struggling with food, water, and electricity, the refugees are in a constant loop of struggle and strife. The unsanitary conditions for the Palestinians have increased the chance of sickness, exposing over 2 million civilians to the deadly effects of starvation, dehydration, and disease. Displaced civilians also find safe shelter hard to come by, with shelters, hospitals, and refugees being constantly bombarded by the intensifying IDF forces.
The Israel campaign to eliminate all of Hamas has been met with backlash from multiple states and countries, even some residents of the US have increased support for the displaced Palestinians. Israel’s brutal campaign has killed more than 1,200 people and kidnapped more than 250.
On Tuesday, January 24, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that Palestinians in Gaza “face inhumane, squalid conditions, struggling to simply make it through another day without proper shelter, heating, sanitary facilities, food, and drinkable water.”
In total, Israeli attacks on Palestinian enclaves have killed a little under 26,000 and injured more than 60,000. With the struggle Palestinians face, Israel predicts Hamas won’t last too much longer.
