On Sunday, Sept. 15, Donald Trump had a second assassination attempt against him while he was at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The former president played a round of golf with his friends when “all of a sudden we heard shots,” Trump recalled in a live-streamed discussion.
According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the Secret Service noticed a rifle barrel sticking out of a fence, which led to agents firing at a man in the bushes around the perimeter. The suspect fled in a car but was later stopped on a highway and detained.
Authorities took the suspect, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, into custody. The suspect is charged with possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and possessing a weapon with an obliterated serial number, but there could be other possible charges, according to CNN.
The FBI is still investigating to learn more about the suspect’s background and determine if he acted alone. Routh is known to have more than 100 criminal counts filed against him according to court records in North Carolina. The FBI is currently trying to gain search warrants for Routh’s vehicle, cell phone, and other devices.
At a news conference, the acting director of the Secret Service, Ronald Rowe Jr., stated that the suspect “did not have line of sight” on Trump. Meanwhile, he also defended the level of security provided for Trump.
CNN provided the court dates for Routh’s trial. A detention hearing was set for Sept. 23, and the arraignment was set for Sept. 30. Routh will remain in jail while he waits for trial.
Routh was suspected to be about 300-500 feet away from Trump, and the only pieces of evidence found near the area of the assassination attempt were a digital camera, a backpack, a loaded SKS-style rifle with a scope, and a black plastic bag with food from the area.
Trump and his running mate, J.D. Vance, later blamed President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for the attempt on his life. Trump told Fox News Digital that the suspect “believed the rhetoric of Biden and Harris, and he acted on it.” Vance also addressed that no one has tried to kill Harris, yet Trump has had multiple assassination attempts in the last couple of months.
Trump was not harmed during last Sunday’s assassination attempt, but the authorities are still investigating all events that happened that day.
