65th Grammy Awards Criticized by Viewers
February 10, 2023
This past Sunday, the 65th Annual Grammy Awards aired, surrounded by drama and excitement. As with most celebrity events, controversy sparked among a select few, which still leaves them in the spotlight currently.
Firstly, comes the backlash against Madonna, who introduced the “Unholy” performance by Sam Smith and Kim Petras. Most people are insulting the “Material Girl” singer for her appearance. Widely known for her beauty, many have criticized her use of plastic surgery, which by some has been deemed “over the top” and some calling her “unrecognizable.” On Tuesday, Madonna responded to these critiques, saying they are rooted in “ageism and misogyny” and that, “Instead of focusing on what I said in my speech…Many people chose to only talk about close-up photos of me…” Madonna made no other comments on the issue.
Another controversy stemming from the Grammy Awards is the satanic-inspired performance of “Unholy” by Sam Smith and Kim Petras. There have been many mixed opinions about the theme the duo chose, and even some politicians spoke their minds. Conservatives such as Ted Cruz found the performance “evil,” and Majorie Taylor Greene called it “demonic.” However, the Church of Satan said the performance was “nothing particularly special” and said they preferred Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” music video. Many people are also saying that it was in bad taste. As the first LGBTQ+ duo to win a Grammy, some thought that the satanic-themed performance was tone-deaf and in poor taste. Neither Sam Smith nor Kim Petras made comments on the criticisms.
The Grammys ran smoothly and with little drama, even though a few controversies popped up. Some notable winners this year include Harry Styles for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album, Beyoncé for Best Dance/Electronic Music Album and Best Dance/Electronic Recording, and Ozzy Osbourne for Best Rock Album. The Grammy Awards are an exciting event, and the drama can make it even better.
