In September, People Magazine launched a readers’ choice poll to vote for the sexiest man based on the category. There was a total of 15 categories: Sexiest Handy Man- Chip Gaines, Sexiest Long-Married Star- Tim McGraw, Gen SeXiest- Shemar Moore, Sexiest Summer Action Star- Glen Powell, Sexiest Fiyero- Jonathan Bailey, Sexiest Talk Show Host- Mark Consuelos, Sexiest Dog Dad: Max Greenfield, Makes BRAT Look Sexiest- Joe Jonas, Sexiest Tattoos- Jeremy Allen White, Sexiest New Heartthrob- Jacob Elordi, Sexiest Musician- Harry Styles, Sexiest First-Time Dad- Robert Pattinson, Sexiest Podcast Host: The Kelce Brothers, Sexiest Supportive Partner In Sports- Hunter Woodhall, and Sexiest TikTok Star- Mark Estes.
On Tuesday, Nov. 12, John Krasinski was given the 2024 Sexiest Man Alive title on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Krasinski told Colbert how surprised he was to find out he got picked and how he will never be as sexy as previous winners like Matthew McConaughey.
After People Magazine revealed two cover options on TV, the cover story dropped with another interview with Krasinski, in which he joked, “I think it’s going to make me do more household chores.”
Several debates came up on social media on who the winner should’ve been. Many are confused about why Krasinski was given the title now instead of other stars who are on the rise, like Glen Powell, which I have to agree with. I was expecting the winner to be someone who received a lot of recognition over the past year, considering it would be chosen based on popularity.
I have come to learn that the title isn’t only about being “sexy,” but it is also about sales. The publication wants to pick a winner that will cause a debate because it helps them gain sales.
I still believe that the winner should be chosen based on their popularity over the past year. For me, that person would be Glen Powell. Ever since his romcom “Anyone But You” with Sydney Sweeny released in December, Powell received a lot of attention on social media. Right when you think the hype was over, Powell starred in another major movie during the summer. His action movie “Twisters” in which he starred along with Daisy Edgar Jones and Anthony Recello, did wonders in ticket sales. Once again, Powell returned to people’s screens, but this time as a witty and reckless cowboy from Arkansas. After the movie’s release, Powell was everywhere on social media as he was promoting his movie. He was all over the TikTok For You Page, and he even participated in the BRAT summer trend.
Considering the amount of attention he received this year, I find him to be the most deserving, but People Magazine had someone else in mind. Given that they try to pick someone who will cause a few debates, it makes sense why they would choose someone more controversial, like John Krasinski. Don’t get me wrong, I love John Krasinski and his character Jim from The Office, but I think it is debatable whether he deserves the title of the 2024 Sexiest Man Alive.
