Taylor Swift’s album Fearless has always had a special place in my heart. I vividly remember being six years old and jamming to Love Story with my iPod mini in the car. I remember hearing Swift’s soft voice playing on the radio on the way to school. And with the creation of Fearless (Taylor’s Version), it just keeps getting better and better. After Swift’s former label sold the rights to her original recordings without her permission, she decided to create a “same but better” version. Fearless (Taylor’s Version) holds all of the original songs, as well as 13 vault tracks. This album is the first re-recorded album by Swift and the first re-recorded album to the number-one spot.
Fearless (Taylor’s Version) gives us a present-day Taylor in conversation with her past 18-year-old self. Her voice has strengthened and deepened over time, and in my opinion, it polishes up her songs very nicely. The songs on the album surge between awe, hope, pain, and bitterness, making it a well-rounded album. Songs like Love Story and You Belong With Me are upbeat and romantic, but You’re Not Sorry and Forever & Always are more somber.
White Horse – This song is slept on. It is my favorite from the album, and I feel like no one talks about it. The country voice, the chorus, the bridge… it is all perfect. The lyrics incorporate a fairy tale image while Swift realizes that her boyfriend is not the person she thought he was. The single won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. If that doesn’t tell you how good this song is, I don’t know what will.
The Way I Loved You – I totally understand why this is a fan favorite. There is nothing better than screaming the chorus of this song at the top of your lungs. The roller coaster kind of rush of pure happiness that I feel when I hear this song can’t be described in words. The song is that good.
Love Story – This was the first Taylor Swift song I ever listened to. It is a fan favorite, and it deserves to be. I love some good storytelling in songs, and this one pulled through. The whimsical, fairytale vibe is top-tier and is what puts the song in a higher-up spot in my ranking.
Don’t You – This vault song is so good, and it upsets me how little recognition it gets. As someone who loves sad, slower songs this checks all of the boxes. You can hear the pain in Swift’s voice, which makes the song even more emotional. I love the depth that it brings to an album that’s seen as “innocent” and “surface level” by many. It really shows that your age does not define how deeply you feel things.
The Other Side Of The Door – This song is fifth on my ranking purely for the bridge. The bridge on this song is so good that I will replay that specific part of the song over and over again. Don’t get me wrong, the rest of the song is good, but for some reason, the bridge itches something in my brain. Go listen to it if you haven’t already.
Fearless is the album where Swift really began to grow popular, and it got even better after the re-recording. While it isn’t my favorite album, I can still appreciate how good some of the songs on the album are (GO LISTEN TO WHITE HORSE RIGHT NOW) and how they have shaped the country music industry. If you aren’t a big fan of Swift’s other albums but love country music, go check this album out. You will find something that you like.
