Quiz bowl is an academic sport here at Southside coached by Mr. Adams. Two teams compete against each other in many areas of knowledge. The quiz bowl team won fifth at state this year.
When asked about the benefits of quiz bowl in school, quiz bowl player Kevin Rotaru said, “A lot of it is basic knowledge. There’s science questions about biology a lot of times there’s questions about elements on the periodic table and chemistry questions like balancing chemical equations.”
“I would describe quiz bowl as very chaotic, but also fun because everybody’s friends, so it’s a very lighthearted vibe,” says Mackezie Settlage, another player.
With the addition of a freshman class at Southside, this is the second year of the freshman quiz bowl team. Coached by Walter Woodie, the team saw many wins, including the junior regional and the red division at the state tournament.
Freshman quiz bowl captain, Josh Chung said, “Overall it was pretty fun and we were successful. I mean we won state. But it was also humbling because every tournament we went to we never got first, the highest we got was second, which I’m grateful for because it pushed us to do better at the end of the year at the state tournament. Overall I would describe this season as insightful and humbling, but fun, and I’m very grateful for it.”
When talking about success in quiz bowl, Mr. Woodie, said, “We are only as successful as the feeder schools, that would be Ramsey, Chaffin, and Trinity. That’s where the success starts that gets them excited about quiz bowl. Here, my job is to bridge between those schools, and then they go on to Mr. Adams.”
This was a successful season for both the freshmen and upperclassmen quiz bowl teams. Mr. Woodie and Mr. Adams will continue to coach their respective teams and hope to see many more wins.
