March 2nd, 2025, will be the 97th Academy Awards that will honor films released and their actors in 2024. There are 24 categories this year, which include Best Actor, Supporting Actor, Best Actress, and Supporting Actress. These are the big four of the categories people really look out for during the Oscars season.
The first category for acting is for best actor in a leading role. The nominees are Adrien Brody for The Brutalist, Timothee Chalemet in A Complete Unknown, Colman Domingo for Sing Sing, Ralph Fieness for Conclave, and Sebastian Stan for The Apprentice. These five actors will be up against each other for the Best Actor award. Adrien Brody will become a second timer winner after his win in 2003 for The Pianist. However, if any of the other nominees win, it will be a first-time win at the Oscars.
The second category for acting is for Best Supporting Actor. The nominees are Yura Borisov in Anora, Kieran Culkin in A Real Pain, Edward Norton in A Complete Unknown, Guy Pearce in The Brutalist, and Jermey Strong for The Apprentice. If any one of these five actors win it will be their first ever win at the Oscars. This is also Edward Norton’s fourth nomination for an Oscar.
The third category for acting is for Best Actress in a lead role, the nominees are Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Karla Sofia Gascon for Emilia Perez, Mikey Midson for Anora, Demi Moore for The Substance. And Fernanda Torres in I’m Still Here. If one of these five actresses win it would also be their first. Some actresses could make history at the Oscars. If she wins, Cynthia Erivo will become an EGOT winner. Karla Sofia Gascon will be the first transgender actress to win an Oscar. Fernanda Torres will be the first Brazilian woman to win an Oscar.
Finally, the last acting category is for Best Supporting Actress. The nominees are Ariana Grande in Wicked, Monica Barbaro for A Complete Unknown, Felicity Jones in The Brutalist, Isabella Rossellini in Conclave, and Zoe Saldana in Emilia Perez. For these five actresses, it will be their first ever Oscar award if they end up winning for the category. However, this will be the second time Jones has been nominated for an Oscar after she was nominated for best actress in 2015 for The Theory of Everything.
