The ongoing government shutdown is starting to seriously affect the nation. Starting November 1st, no new SNAP benefits are going to be sent out to the beneficiaries because of the program’s lack of funding. 25 states are suing Trump because he is withholding food funding assistance, even though the agricultural department has enough money to continue to send money out.
The Agricultural department has argued that the money could be needed for emergencies, such as natural disasters, before funding resumes. The 25 Democratic states that are suing the Trump administration replied by saying that stopping the funding is going to deprive millions of Americans of funding for groceries.
New York Attorney General Letitia James, said “SNAP is one of our nation’s most effective tools to fight hunger, and the USDA has the money to keep it running.”
The recent controversy on the expensive ballroom that Trump is building in the White House has led to some criticizing the way he is using funding during his term as president.
California Governor, Gavin Newsom said, “While Donald Trump parades around the world trying to repair the economic damage he’s done with his incompetence, he’s denying food to millions of Americans who will go hungry next month.”
The Democratic States are suing the Trump administration because they argue that the government is obligated to feed the people, which includes sending you SNAP benefits.
To battle against the shortage of food, grocery stores have partnered with DoorDash to help minimize the damage of the lack of SNAP benefits by providing food to SNAP beneficiaries that aren’t going to receive aid.
Max Rettig, vice president of DoorDash and global head of public policy, said, “Fighting hunger is core to our mission at DoorDash, and we’re stepping up alongside leading grocers and retailers to help bridge the gap.”
The lack of SNAP benefits for the month of November is going to cause many problems for families across the country, and half the States are fighting to prevent this by suing the Trump administration, while other companies, such as DoorDash, are doing their part to feed America.
