August 21, 2025, season two of Peacemaker aired on HBO Max. In this season, James Gunn decided to explore the multiverse like other past superhero/comic book media in the last 10 years. Although I do think Peacemaker took a different approach when it came to exploring the multiverse.
When it came to the multiverse in season two, it wasn’t through some magical being or powers like you’ve seen in different superhero projects. It was through a device that you see Peacemaker, played by John Cena, already had, which transfers a multiverse door that leads to a huge, never-ending room full of doors. It was something that Peacemaker had access to since he was a child, when his father got a hold of it from a flashback we see in later episodes. I did like this concept a bit more than magical beings or space aliens like we’ve seen with others, so it did give this new sense of exploration, let’s say. Peacemaker had never really explored how the door worked until this season, since he only used the door room for his pet eagle, Eagly, for when it was too cold for him to let the bird outside.
When Peacemaker, who is under the influence during this, wanders through the door and comes across where there was a set of his helmets that his father had made for him in front of a different door, but his father had died in the last season since Peacemaker killed him. Of course, not being in the right state of mind, he walks right through the door. In this new dimension that he walks in, he finds that both his father and brother are alive and that they are all in a superhero team together. However, while walking through this new dimension, he managed to run into the other him from that dimension. It seems like in 2025, we’ve had a lot of movies that have had one actor play two characters, like Sinners or Mickey 17.
But the only problem with Peacemaker is that he accidentally kills the other dimension version of himself. Now, if that had happened with any other type of multiverse/ different timeline story, there would’ve been bigger consequences when messing with different timelines. Like in the Marvel Universe, you have the Time Variant Authority, whose job is to make sure that the timelines stay intact and that no one messes them up. Fortunately for Peacemaker, his biggest consequence is that his friends were mad at him, and he was also hurting himself mentally, staying in this other dimension in place of the second Peacemaker.
So, while this season did explore the different timelines and multiverse, there wasn’t enough time to really go deep into this world other than the fact that the Earth that Peacemaker found himself on was ‘Earth-X’, which is a timeline where the Nazi’s won WW ll. There is so much that goes into that timeline, and I do wish we could’ve explored it more, but this is about Peacemaker and his journey through that, so there wouldn’t have been enough time to explore everything about it.
Unfortunately, there will be no season 3 of Peacemaker. So we just have to hope that James Gunn continues Peacemakers’ story through another character or a group of characters like Superman or The Justice Gang. I did, however, like season one over season two because there was a lot more charm, the pacing was a bit better, and Peacemaker himself had so much character development throughout the eight episodes. With there only being eight episodes, you can only do so much when it comes to something as complicated as the multiverse and different timelines.
I, however, hope that Detective Comics strays away from the multiverse just because we’ve seen it so much recently in superhero media. I have no problem with the multiverse and seeing how different other timelines may have turned out if one big or small thing didn’t happen, but I just feel like we need to see more of the characters we see on screen fight and protect their timeline and stay where they are. So Peacemaker may be the only modern DC media that does this, but we never know what James Gunn could have planned for the future.
