The NBA is hosting the All-Star Weekend in Inglewood, California from February 13-15th. The All-Star Weekend is an event that occurs annually in the National Basketball Association (NBA). During this event, players participate in different contests and games including the 3-Point Contest, the Slam Dunk Contest, the Rising Stars Game, and the All-Star Game.
In the 3-Point Contest,the best shooters in the league compete to be the 3-Point Champion. Eight Participants take turns taking three point shots from different areas on the court. The three players with the most three pointers advance to the next round. With five players eliminated, the last three participants play another round. The winner of this final round will win the 3-point trophy. The participants for this year’s contest were revealed to be Damian Lillard, Devin Booker, Bobby Portis Jr, Kon Knueppel, Donovan Mitchell, Tyrese Maxey, Jamal Murray, and Normal Powell.
In the Dunk Contest, the four participants compete to get the highest score. To get the highest score, the players must come up with the most creative dunk. The dunks are scored by five judges. The two players with the highest scores advance to the final where they show off more impressive dunks. The participants for this year consists of Carter Bryant, Jase Richardson, Jaxson Hayes, and Keshad Johnson.
The most anticipated event from All-Star Weekend is the All-Star Game. The NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver, changed the format of the game to attract fans. Now, the 24 All-Stars will be divided into three teams. This year, the teams will include Team Stars, Team Stripes, and Team World.
Team Stars will include young, talented players. The participants for Team Stars will be Scottie Barnes, Devin Booker, Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Anthony Edwards, and Chet Holmgren. The team will also include the likes of Jalen Johnson and Tyrese Maxey.
Team Stripes is made up of veteran players from the United States. The Stripes will include Jaylen Brown, Jalen Brunson, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Brandon Ingram, Lebron James, Kawhi Leonard, Donovan Mitchell, and De’Aaron Fox. Both Ingram and Fox are on the team due to injuries.
Team World is built around the theme of international players. This team will be made up of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Deni Avdija, Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Alperen Sengun, Pascal Siakam, Karl-Anthony Towns, Victor Wembenyama, and Norma Powell.
The three respective teams will compete against each other in a mini tournament. The Stripes will play against the Stars in a 12 minute game. Next, both teams will play against Team World. The two teams with the best records will face off in the finals. Tie-breakers will be decided via point differential.
The Teams will be rewarded with cash depending on the place the team finished in. For first place, each player will receive $125,000. For second place, players are rewarded $50,000 each. Lastly, the team in third place will receive $25,000 for each participant.
Other events happening on All-Star Weekend will include the Ruffles All-Star Celebrity Game and the Castrol Rising Stars Game.
The Ruffles All-Star Celebrity Game is where famous celebrities are divided into two teams. These two teams will compete against each other. Notable celebrities for this game include GloRilla, Mookie Betts, and Cody Jones.
The Castrol Rising Stars Game gives an opportunity for rookies and other young players to gain fan attraction. Players competing in this game include the likes of Stephon Castle, Ace Bailey, and V.J. Edgecomb.
