Popstar Sabrina Carpenter released her highly anticipated album “Short n’ Sweet” on Aug. 23. Her two hit singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” were both high up on the Billboard Hot 100, proving Carpenter’s expertise in what truly makes a great pop song. Her sixth studio album had 233 million streams in the first week. When she released “Espresso” in April, the song blew up instantly, making its way to the No. 3 spot on the Hot 100. Her next single, “Please Please Please,” blew up even more, earning its place in the No. 1 slot in the Hot 100. The music video even co-starred her real-life boyfriend Barry Keoghan, an actor known for his performance in the movie Saltburn. Now, with the release of her new album, Carpenter has secured her spot in the Billboard charts.
I think her songs are so beloved because Carpenter knows how to really connect to her audience and fans. This album holds some of her most honest songwriting yet, making it easy for people around the world to connect with the popstar.
On social media, Carpenter wrote, “This project is quite special to me and I hope it’ll be something special to you.”
“Short n’ Sweet” is a very upbeat album, while also packing the emotional punch. Fans theorize many songs on the album are about her short romance with singer Shawn Mendes, who had an on-and-off relationship with singer Camilla Cabello. We really see this in the “Taste” music video that stars both Carpenter and actress Jenna Ortega.
Throughout the album, Carpenter explores many different ranges of emotions. The songs on this album are equally ones you can jam out to in your car and sob to in your room. My uncle, who rarely listens to anything that isn’t country, has been just as obsessed with her new album as everyone else is.
At the moment, I am obsessed with the songs “Sharpest Tool” and “Don’t Smile” from the new album. While these are on the sadder side, “Taste” is definitely one that I’ve had on repeat. I love the chorus and the beat of “Sharpest Tool.” I really like it when the song lyrics are sad, but the actual beat and music is more on the upbeat side. That song does just that. “Don’t Smile” is a very mellow song stuck in my head for hours after I first listened to it. It is a song that you can’t help but tap your foot to. It is severely underrated. Of course, “Taste” has to be up there at some point. It is iconic. Carpenter knows how to deliver the perfect unhinged lyrics. Also, that music video? That is a cinematic masterpiece. I love music videos that show a story, and I didn’t think I needed to watch Carpenter and Ortega try to kill each other over a guy, but I did. And the ending wrapped up perfectly. This list is for sure not set and stone. Next week, I could have a new top three. That’s how awesome Carpenter is. It is hard for me to really love an album, but she delivered.
Last night, Carpenter won a Video Music Award for Song of the Year for “Espresso.” I think this award is well deserved. The album delivers the perfect amount of emotion and beat. Every song is catchy. I, along with millions of others, will listen to anything Sabrina Carpenter puts out. When’s the next album coming out?
