Northside and Southside High School students march together to protest the actions of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The walkout was planned days in advance by an unknown person.
The walkout remained peaceful and no one was harmed. Students walked on the sidewalk, holding up signs and chanting. Cars passing by honked to show support for the protest. The protests focused on the controversial actions of ICE agents across the country.
Signs carried by students had statements such as “What happened to Liberty and Justice [for] all?” and “Abolish ICE!”
Even though many of the students that attended the walkout are under voting age, they made clear their political opinions through a constitutional protest.
During the protest, students were heard chanting “No hate. No fear. Immigrants are welcome here.”
Northside student protestors marched to Southside, triggering a code yellow, as the Southside students walked out to join them. The code yellow has been seen as an attempt to stop the protest but school officials claim that it was to ensure the safety of the students.
A post from the district stated that “The safety of all students is the district’s priority, and interrupting scheduled instructional time may pose safety issues for all students.”
Students are free to participate in peaceful protest, but the school staff have enforced the punishment for not being in class. Since the protest was during school hours, students that attended were truant to class. Hundreds of students walked out of school knowing these consequences to share their beliefs and exercise their rights.
