AI has recently become a controversial topic in schools. While there are both advantages and disadvantages to its use, it should be considered whether it is truly harmful. Yes, some students may use AI to cheat; however, it can also be beneficial in helping clarify concepts for learners. Thus, the pros and cons of using AI in schools can be either helpful or detrimental. Schools are currently adapting to AI by blocking its use, but they are also finding ways to use it beneficially.
“I do not feel very prepared to incorporate AI tools into my teaching. Maybe in the spring of 2024, the teachers received quick training in ways that AI can be incorporated into teaching. However, I didn’t find that applicable to my practice. Teachers need more time to be able to explore AI tools and how they can complement the instruction and activities we are already providing to students to help them achieve their personal and the school’s learning goals,” English and Seminar Teacher, Laura Keener said.
Educators are often unfamiliar with the rapid rise of AI. According to a national survey conducted by Tyton Partners in 2023, 27% of students reported being regular users of generative AI tools, compared to only 9% of instructors. This gap suggests that many educators may resort to shutting down access to these tools until they understand what AI is and how to use it effectively, if they choose to learn at all. Additionally, many individuals from older generations tend to be hesitant and struggle to understand new technology.
“Help the next generation face the reality of the world and develop instruments and ways of navigating this reality with integrity,” lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a former elementary and high school teacher, Houman Harouni, says.
AI offers numerous benefits that are often overshadowed by its drawbacks. For instance, AI can provide immediate feedback on assignments and assist with test preparation. It can also customize content and lessons to meet the unique needs of each student, which helps engage and motivate them to complete their work. For teachers, AI provides extensive access to information, which can be useful for creating test questions. Moreover, AI is a continually evolving tool that can be very beneficial for both students and teachers.
AI can hinder students’ creativity and their ability to think independently. It can lead to issues such as academic dishonesty, generate inaccurate data, and raise concerns about online security. Additionally, over-reliance on technology can stifle students’ creative potential. Strong decision-making skills are essential for processing and reasoning through complex information across various fields, including research and education. This, in turn, helps develop proficient decision-making abilities (Duhaylungsod & Chavez, 2023). However, since AI can impede these decision-making skills, it risks diminishing the number of highly capable individuals in our society.
“I think over the next few years, AI will prove to be a negative thing. I think students will learn to rely on AI and not be able to think for themselves or be able to create something from their own imagination. Overall, it will only give schools a worse image,” Junior, Devyn Turnage says.
With the recent increase in AI usage, several concerns have emerged. Although there are still aspects we don’t fully understand, we are continuously learning. The use of AI in the classroom is one of the more controversial topics surrounding this technology, yet most teachers seem prepared to tackle the challenges it presents.
